NIASET Africa’s AI Dataset
Gary Bedell: AI Visionary

About Us

THE SANKOFAI PROJECT / NIASET

Conceived in Canada, Designed for Africa

Gary Bedell is a former Mandela aide, diplomat, fully-initiated Sangoma, and AI visionary dedicated to ensuring Africa’s voices shape the future of AI. As the founder of SankofAI and the leader behind the Ukuqonda Tokenizer and NIASET. He brings unmatched access to 40+ nations, deep cultural legitimacy, and a rare blend of political, technical, and storytelling expertise. His mission: to create the world’s most comprehensive African language and cultural dataset — giving AI the reasoning, diversity, and wisdom of the continent’s oldest civilizations.
SankofAI is a Canadian based, not-for-profit, social enterprise, established to prepare the project for a launch in Africa in 2026.  We are currently in the research phase, elaborating a large number of reports and studies to assist us with the difficult task of curating 2,000+ languages and determining a statistically valid representation of 1,2 billion Africans.
Just before the project becomes operational, SankofAI will register as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in an African nation, such as Rwanda, and establish our offices. One of the criteria for the location is the availability of Starlink in our host nation.
Despite the Canadian connection through Gary Bedell, we have always seen SankofAI as a made in Africa solution that will employ local staff and services whenever possible. Our core mission is to build NIASET as a sustainable model with the infrastructure and expertise to continue solely in African hands after the 5-year plan is complete.
The project will begin fundraising in earnest in the fourth quarter of 2025. These funds will finance the establishment of the NGO in Africa as well as outreach to potential African partners such as government ministries, universities, traditional leaders and healers, ethnographic museums, photo archives (both in Africa and abroad) and community organizations.
Our immediate financial goal is to fund our one-year pilot project for NIASET that will operate in South Africa, Nigeria and Namibia. The twelve month budget is approximately $12 million USD. At the same time, we will begin to build the Ukuqonda tokenizer, an effort that will run concurrently with the NIASET pilot project with an estimated budget of $13 million. We expect to be in negotiations with future technology partners before the end of 2025.

HOW WE NAMED THE PROJECT

We originally thought of naming the project with a variation of the Bantu word Ubuntu, which means "I am because we are". Unfortunately, there are too many copyright issues relating to the Linux operating system of the same name. We are grateful that this impediment existed because it led us to brainstorm further and eventually select a word based on the Adinkra symbol "Sankofa". We added an "i" on the end to incorporate AI into the name. Originating from the Akan people of Ghana, the Sankofa symbol is often depicted as a mythical bird with its head turned backward and taking an egg from its back. The symbol embodies the idea of looking to the past to gain wisdom and knowledge that can be used to build a better future. We feel that this is a perfect metaphor for The SankofAI Project.

The Sankofai Logo

Our founder wanted the logo for the project to be inspired by the Adinkra Sankofa symbol but to have a distinctly modern feel to reflect that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a cutting-edge technology. To be perfectly transparent, Gary Bedell used Generative AI to design the logo and we are thrilled with the result. It represents a fusion of tradition and high-tech while still honoring ancestral wisdom. Perfect!

The NIASET Logo

NIASET is a combination of the Swahili word 'Nia', which means purpose and dataset. NIASET was designed to be a purpose-driven dataset. The name is easy to remember and resonates as Pan-African. THE EVOLUTION OF AN AI VISIONARY

"Few people can credibly navigate tribal elders, AI engineers, Heads of State and  global funders in the same week. Meet Gary Bedell."
Gary is a former journalist, VIP security consultant, and now traditional healer whose professional journey has spanned four continents and multiple disciplines. He served his country in the diplomatic corps with External Affairs Canada and as an aide to Nelson Mandela. He has an MBA from the University of Western Ontario and an Advanced Certificate in Cyber Security from York University.
After Nelson Mandela became President, Gary returned often to complete sensitive missions for his former boss. This informal role allowed him to  travel extensively throughout Africa building extensive contacts. On a privatel level he developed a strong interest in photography and cultural anthropology.
In 2022, Gary was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, which motivated him to return to South Africa and complete his training as a Sangoma - a Zulu traditional healer. Affectionately called Mandela's Twasa (initiate), he  now combines ancestral wisdom with modern technological expertise to lead the SankofAI Project and NIASET. His goal: to make AI more human - and more African.

HOW GARY'S VISION BECAME SANKOFAI

"Vision without action is only dreaming, action without vision is only passing time, vision with action can change the world." Nelson Mandela

A FRIENDSHIP THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Gary was tasked by Prime Minister Mulroney to organise Nelson Mandela's first visit to Canada in 1990, only months after his release from prison. They bonded during the trip and Mandela eventually requested that Gary accompany him as an aide during his historic tour of the United States. Later, he wrote to Canada asking for Gary's services in South Africa. After months of stalling by the Apartheid government, he arrived in Johannesburg in December of 1990.

THE END OF AN ERA

Gary returned to South Africa in December, 2013 for the funeral of Nelson Mandela as a guest commentator for CTV National News. It was the last time that he saw his Gobela (teacher), Horatio Zungu, who had begun his instruction as a Sangoma at Mandela's behest in 1991. Horatio Zungu passed in 2020. The loss of both these seminal figures in Gary's life planted the first seed for what would become the SankofAI Project.

A SPIRITUAL TURNING POINT

When Gary was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal cancer in October of 2022, he made the decision to return to South Africa to complete his training as a Sangoma. His original teacher had passed in 2020, he would need to find a new Gobela. Not an easy task. Fortunately, the Ancestors led him to Censo Ngubane from Pietermaritzburg, a powerful Zulu healer who agreed to resume his training. After almost 18 months, Gary graduated as a Sangoma in December of 2024.

THE START OF A NEW ERA

Gogo Jephat, seated on Gary's right, is also a Zulu Sangoma. He has extensive contacts with traditional healers in South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Tanzania. He is a perfect example of an ideal regional partner for the SankofAI Project. He can help the organization and our volunteers safely connect with tribes all over Southern Africa. Gary has already begun the outreach with traditional leaders, healers, NGOs, Institutes of African Studies at Universities in Africa and abroad, ethnographic museums and private archives.
Our contacts in Africa are key to the success of the project but just as important are our future technology partners who SankofAI will count on for funding and material support to build the Ukuqonda tokenizer and NIASET. Gary hopes to be in contract negotiations with companies, such as OpenAI, Google and Meta, by the end of 2025. We don't see ourselves merely as recipients of corporate largesse, but rather as a collaborative venture offering a vital asset to AI companies seeking accurate datasets and true global representation.

A FINAL WORD ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY

Even when we achieve our ambitious goal to build NIASET, a super Pan-African dataset that is representative, accurate and inclusive for all Africans, our work will not be finished. There is currently a massive demographic shift happening in Africa as people move from rural areas to large urban centers in search of opportunity. Millions are now living in slums and informal settlements without electricity, clean water and protection against rampant crime. Food insecurity and poverty are endemic. Yet despite these challenges, music and art flourish amidst the squalor; often the only antidote to desperation. Elements of traditional culture morph into dynamic, modern expressions of street art, fashion, dance and sound. We have seen this in Soweto (South Africa), in the Bariga slums of Lagos, Nigeria and in countless other urban centers. Magnificent explosions of color and creativity. We are truly witnessing Africa's Renaissance. A rebirth conceived in struggle and suffering.
Many of the wonderful customs of the Himba, Surma and other endangered peoples of Africa will sadly disappear with time. Fortunately, they will live on in NIASET and inspire new artistic expressions. They will be proud, dynamic and determined to claim Africa's place in the modern world. Our task will not be complete if our project fails to provide sustainable tools and infrastructure to ensure that these developing hybrid cultures will be equally represented in NIASET and in future AI models. How many Basquiats or Picassos are being forged in the urban angst of the new Africa? We can't wait to find them.

JOIN OUR ETHICAL AI JOURNEY

We are looking for photographers, regional team leaders, digital archivists, and data annotators to join as volunteers when The SankofAI Project begins operations in Africa in 2026. VOLUNTEER WITH US

SANKOFAI

History will judge if Artificial Intelligence ends up purely as a tool for greater productivity and higher profits or whether it fulfills its true potential and becomes a force for representation, inclusion and equality. As an AI Ethicist, I belief that it should be both. The SankofAI Project is a blueprint to help achieve that laudable goal. Let's get this done!
